Sweet Sally's, Public Square, Watertown, NY

Image
I had the good fortune to stumble upon this little gem the day it opened.  The proprietor was clearly excited to be opened.   The smell of fresh paint was almost overwhelming but that just confirmed how new it all was.   The small space just cried out for small soda fountain style table and chairs.  I asked if they were on the way.  I was told sadly no, that having seating put them in a different category with the health department, so they had no plans to offer seating.  Happily  benches are available outside.   I asked about the soft serve flavors.  The soft serve equipment had not arrived.   I went with the $2 kiddie size.  Delicious and the perfect size for a little treat.  I am rating them 4, for potential.  I admire what they are trying to do for the downtown area.  Best of luck to you!

Lickety Split, Ice Cream Stand Dexter NY.

Great little seasonal Ice Cream Stand.  Located on the banks of the Black River.  Some of the best soft custard in the area.   We ordered a small hard cone and a 24 flavor option, both were excellent.  The total was $6.50.  The 24 flavor options are only available in medium.  Worth the calories and the cost.  2018 prices.  Looking forward to going back to try some of the other flavors.    kiddie twist  2021 prices Price increase is not out of line considering the change in labor cost. 2022   I ordered the baby cone because I just wanted a little treat. Luckily she showed me the cone first. I tried to get a picture, The cone looks like it would be for an infant or a doll.   $2.50 for a kiddie cone.  Rating 4.

Attilio's Italian Restaurant, Clayton NY

Image
It's all about the view...  Attilio's is located on Riverside Drive in beautiful Clayton, NY.  It's possible to enter from the patio, but the restaurant can be crowded so it is a little easier to enter from the street side. Once inside place your order from the simple menu of Pizza, salad  or chicken.  We knew exactly what we wanted.  We ordered the Attilio's pizza and were told they were out of mushrooms.  That also eliminated my second choice which was a pizza with mushrooms.  I have never run a restaurant but it seems like mushrooms wouldn't be to hard to procure if you are located in a town with a grocery store.  We chose a sausage pizza.  Proceeded to the patio to select a table.  They do have a few tables inside the small restaurant, but unless the weather is awful, enjoy the patio.    They don't offer table service so head out and and enjoy the view while waiting for your order.  Pizza and Salad seem to be the theme for the evening. I do

Apollo, Watertown

Nice little family style restaurant.  It is possible to enjoy a meal here for less than $10.40.  They have many menu items such as burgers and gyros priced below $10. We visited on a Friday night and the special was a fish fry.  We opted for one gryo and one special.   The lamb gyro is wonderful.  The fish fry was average.  When the bill arrived we were charged the full price for the fish. We pointed this out to the waitress and she gladly adjusted the bill. It was a very pleasant meal.  We will visit again and stick with the Greek options.  Rating 4

Hollywood Inn, Merrill NY

What a little gem. We we stumbled across this historic restaurant on a trip from Plattsburgh New York. The owner waiter bartender andand I'm not sure what other functions he was performing that day was wonderful. Chatting with him is like a history lesson. The restaurant  is adorned with memorabilia throughout the years.  It was like a trip back in time. We visited between seasons and the porch was closed for the winter, so it was difficult to experience the full beauty of the lake.  It is possible to eat here for close to minimum wage, if you order the soup and salad bar or a burger sandwich. We opted for a full dinner which included the soup, salad and bread bar.  The quantity of food provided in the dinner gave us ample leftovers for another meal.  Overall rating 4.5.  It's a little pricey but they make up for it with a view and historic charm.
